FG Hails Simon Ekpa’s Conviction as Major Victory in Fight Against Terror

The federal government has welcomed the conviction of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa, who was sentenced to six years in prison by Finland’s Päijät-Häme district court on Monday for terrorism-related offences.

The court found Ekpa guilty of promoting terrorist acts and involvement with a terrorist organization, noting that he used his large social media following to incite unrest in Nigeria’s south-east between August 2021 and November 2024.

In a post on X, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the conviction as a “major victory in the war against terror” and hailed it as a significant achievement for the Nigerian people in their collective fight against violent extremism.

Ekpa, a follower of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was previously at the forefront of the sit-at-home campaign in the south-east, a movement whose violent enforcement resulted in multiple deaths. Following Kanu’s extradition from Kenya in June 2021, Ekpa was appointed lead broadcaster for Radio Biafra but was later dismissed after refusing to comply with the organization’s rules. He then formed a splinter secessionist group while based in Finland.

Arrested in November 2024, Ekpa was convicted for spreading terrorist propaganda on social media. In March 2025, the federal government officially designated him a “terrorism financier,” underscoring the serious threat posed by his activities.
