The Ondo State Government has pledged strong support for the upcoming distribution of 3.6 million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) across the state, urging residents to participate fully in the malaria prevention initiative.
The campaign, scheduled to run from September 8 to 17, 2025, is being carried out in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme and Malaria Consortium, and will be formally inaugurated by Governor Aiyedatiwa. The program aims to reduce the state’s malaria prevalence, currently estimated at 27 percent.
During an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, the team lead, Mrs. Olubunmi Ojelade, explained that trained personnel wearing malaria-branded uniforms would register residents and distribute nets door-to-door. She highlighted that sleeping under ITNs can cut malaria incidence by up to 50 percent in sub-Saharan Africa.
Mrs. Ojelade further noted that malaria remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, which accounts for 25 percent of global cases and 30 percent of malaria-related deaths, with children under five and pregnant women being the most vulnerable. She added that about 60 percent of patients in health facilities are treated for malaria.
Responding, Hon. Ajanaku assured full media support for the campaign, including jingles, news reports, and features on state-owned platforms such as the magazine program Ondo Path to Progress. He also advised recipients to air the nets in the shade for 24 hours before hanging and to use them consistently every night.
The Commissioner emphasized that the initiative would reach all 18 local government areas of the state to ensure maximum impact.
