NUPENG Suspends Strike After Agreement with FG, Dangote Group on Workers’ Unionisation

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Tuesday suspended its planned two-day strike after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government and the Dangote Group on the unionisation of workers at the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.

The suspension followed a conciliation meeting convened by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja, after Monday’s initial dialogue failed to yield results.

Those in attendance included representatives of the Dangote Group led by Sayyu Dantata, officials of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and other key stakeholders.

NUPENG’s National President, Williams Akporeha, confirmed the suspension of the strike, noting that the parties had reached an understanding on the contentious issue of workers’ rights.

According to the agreement signed after the meeting, the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals acknowledged the right of workers to unionise, in line with the provisions of Nigeria’s labour laws.

“The management agreed with this fact and responded that they are not averse to the unionisation of their employees by labour unions in tandem with the provisions of the extant labour laws,” the communiqué stated.

The resolution further affirmed that workers of both the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals who are willing to unionise would now be free to do so without hindrance.

The move comes amid fuel supply disruptions recorded across parts of the country during the period of the strike threat.
