Tragedy struck in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday evening as gunmen ambushed and killed a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu.

Eyewitnesses said the priest was returning from Enugu, the state capital, when his vehicle was intercepted by armed men riding on a motorcycle near the site of an ongoing hospital project in the community.

The assailants reportedly shot at the tyres of his car, forcing him to a halt, before firing multiple shots at close range. The cleric died on the spot.

Community sources described the attack as an assassination rather than a failed kidnap attempt, though the motive remains unclear. The incident has sparked tension in Eha-Alumonah and surrounding areas, with parishioners and residents expressing grief and shock.

Authorities in Enugu are yet to issue an official statement as security agencies intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators.
