Unity and love have been highlighted as essential drivers of development during the commissioning of the 15.13km Ika–Azumini Road and 1.53km internal roads in Ika Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The ceremony was attended by Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The new road, which begins at Ikot Esu in Ika and extends three kilometers into Azumini in Ukwa East Local Government, Abia State, is expected to boost economic activities and connectivity across the region.
Minister Wike praised Governor Eno for promoting unity in Akwa Ibom, noting that collaboration with federal authorities, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has enhanced federal attention and investment in the State. “Leaders must make sacrifices for their people. Governor Eno has shown his commitment to the citizens of Akwa Ibom,” Wike said. He also commended the Governor for constructing roads irrespective of political affiliations, including one leading to the hometown of Federal Executive Council member Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo.
Governor Eno reiterated his commitment to completing inherited projects for the benefit of all residents, stressing that development transcends party lines. “Governance is a continuum. What matters is completing projects for the common good of the people,” he stated. He described the new road as a gateway to commercial opportunities, linking Ika to Aba, a major commercial hub in Abia State.
The Governor also referenced other projects, including the Midim Atan–Ikot Inyang–Ikot Akpan Ekpenyong–Udo Road, and directed the Ministry of Works to ensure contractors expedite completion within three months, warning of contract termination for delays.
Local leaders, including Ika Chairman Barr Utibe Nwoko, praised the Governor for the unprecedented road development, highlighting its economic and security benefits and connectivity to major markets, including Mkpohoeto Market.
Community representatives, Barr. Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN, and Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, expressed gratitude to Governor Eno and pledged their support for his 2027 re-election. The Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, and Engr.
