The Edo State Government has officially launched the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) — a transformative health program aimed at improving survival rates for mothers and newborns across the state.
To commemorate the launch, the government commenced a five-day workshop in Benin City, bringing together key health stakeholders, including representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health, the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, professional medical bodies, and local health authorities.
Originally introduced by the Federal Government in November 2024, the MAMII program seeks to strengthen maternal and newborn health systems, reduce preventable deaths, and foster innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based interventions across Nigeria.
Flagging off the initiative, the Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling maternal and infant mortality.
“Over the course of this workshop, participants are expected to deepen their understanding of the MAMII framework, identify causes of maternal and neonatal deaths, and develop strategic solutions to improve health outcomes in communities across the state,” he stated.
The Edo State SWAP Coordinator, Dr. Godswill Omijie, further explained that the program is designed to tackle the root causes of maternal and neonatal deaths, noting that four local government areas currently account for the highest number of cases — a fact that underscores the need for targeted intervention.
In his presentation, Mr. Omoruyi Iyahen, Deputy Director at the National Health Insurance, gave an overview of the MAMII strategy, highlighting the progress achieved nationally and stressing that the ultimate goal is to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths to zero.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, commended the initiative while cautioning that “it takes consistent and collaborative effort to ensure no woman loses her life while giving birth.”
Also in attendance were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, and the Chairman of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Odiase Ehiabhi, alongside other top officials who lauded the program as a timely intervention to strengthen maternal care and protect families.
Through this initiative, the Edo State Government has once again reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives of mothers and children, ensuring that every birth is safe and every life counts.
