The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has stepped up efforts to enhance disability inclusion across governance structures in the state, paying an advocacy visit to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development on Monday.

During the visit, LASODA General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, called for heightened attention to disability matters at the local level. She emphasized the need for equitable employment opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and stressed the importance of identifying disability types and ensuring that care providers at the grassroots are equipped to offer effective support. Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal also highlighted the significance of community engagement, urging initiatives that empower PWDs with the knowledge and tools to contribute meaningfully to society. She further advocated collaboration with traditional rulers and Community Development Associations to promote Agenda PLUS, the disability-focused initiative under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

In response, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, described the visit as timely and aligned with the Ministry’s goals for inclusive governance. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving accessibility for PWDs across all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas. Mrs. Bolarinwa shared a recent intervention in an employment case involving a deaf applicant, underscoring that while employment decisions are merit-based, inclusion and equal opportunity remain non-negotiable.

The Permanent Secretary also called for increased community awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and foster understanding of disability issues. She pledged to work collaboratively with LASODA, local authorities, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that PWDs are not merely represented but actively involved in community development.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to creating a more inclusive Lagos, where no one is left behind.
