The Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly rejected allegations by United States Senator Ted Cruz, who recently claimed that Christians are being targeted and killed in large numbers across Nigeria. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the claims as “false, misleading, and not reflective of the reality on the ground.”
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Minister Idris refuted Senator Cruz’s figures, which alleged that over 20,000 churches had been burned and more than 52,000 Christians killed. “This is not true. Where did he get those numbers from? I think this is absolutely absurd. It’s not supported by any facts whatsoever. The Nigerian government rejects that,” Idris stated emphatically.
He stressed that no Nigerian official or institution supports or colludes with violent extremists, reaffirming that the government remains committed to upholding religious freedom and peaceful coexistence among all faiths. “Nigeria is a multi-faith country — Christians, Muslims, and even those who don’t adhere to either religion live freely here. The government ensures that everyone enjoys full religious freedom,” he said.
While acknowledging that violent extremism affects both Christians and Muslims, the Minister clarified that there is no deliberate targeting of any religious group. “It’s absolutely false to say there’s a calculated attempt to kill a particular faith group,” he added.
Idris assured Nigerians and the international community that the country’s security forces remain committed to fighting terrorism, insurgency, and banditry without bias or discrimination.
