Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to advancing food security and sustainable agriculture, highlighting several key initiatives that are transforming the sector. The remarks were made during the World Food Day commemoration, themed “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” held at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, which also featured a large rally in support of the Governor’s re-election bid.

Represented at the event by State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, Governor Soludo described farmers as central to the state’s economic growth and emphasized the administration’s vision and strategic interventions in agriculture. These efforts, he noted, aim to ensure inclusive prosperity while strengthening the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across the state.

In his address, Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, praised Governor Soludo’s leadership as a “front-runner in food security and inclusive prosperity through agriculture-led transformation.” He noted that the Governor’s mantra of “One People, One Government, One Agenda” has unified development efforts across sectors, yielding measurable results in the agric sector.

The Commissioner highlighted landmark programs driving Anambra’s agricultural revolution, including the Regenerative Agriculture Policy, Oil Palm and Coconut Revolution, the Igbo Economic Tree Crops Programme, and the distribution of free organic fertilizer to over 20,000 smallholder farmers. Other notable interventions included the IFAD-VCDP empowerment of over 13,000 farmers, the ATASP-1 Mega Irrigation Project in Ayamelum supporting 10,000 hectares of rice cultivation, and the forthcoming Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) and Agriculture Transformation Centres (ATCs), aimed at boosting value addition, processing, and youth employment.

Ihejiofor also praised initiatives such as the Farm to Feed Campaign, adopted by local government councils across Anambra, and Her Excellency Dr. Nonye Soludo’s Healthy Living Gardens Initiative, a school-based program promoting nutrition, environmental awareness, and practical food cultivation among children.

Representing the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, the South East Regional Director, Ichie Ogonna Nkamnebe, emphasized that the World Food Day theme underscores the need for continued investment in agriculture. He highlighted federal interventions, including the provision of tractors for mechanized farming, agric credits via the Bank of Industry (BOI), and distribution of essential farm inputs, noting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring food security through stakeholder participation.

Other stakeholders, including AFAN State Chairman Okelue Nnawuno, Chief Emma Obi, Chief Charles Okafor, and others, lauded Governor Soludo’s accomplishments in agriculture, citing interventions such as organic fertilizer distribution, regenerative agriculture policies, oil palm and coconut programs, and improved rural infrastructure for market access. They pledged their full support for his re-election bid, emphasizing their commitment to mobilizing farmers across all 21 local government areas.

The event also featured a special honor awarded to Governor Soludo, named “Aka-Ji-Ife” (the torch bearer), by ORSH-EL Community Development Initiatives, recognizing his transformative leadership in the state’s agriculture sector.

The celebration underscored Anambra’s ongoing agricultural renaissance, with multiple programs ensuring food security, sustainable growth, and empowerment for farmers, while consolidating support for the Governor’s continued leadership.
