One Dead, Two Injured as NDLEA, Suspected Drug Barons Clash in Edo State

A violent confrontation between operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and suspected drug barons in Okpuje, Uzeba community, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, has left one person dead and two others injured.

The deceased was identified as 16-year-old Emmanuel Monday, while the injured include 20-year-old Godspower Omage, 54-year-old Ajayi Irobia, and an NDLEA officer.

According to the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the agency’s operatives were on an official assignment in the community when they came under heavy attack by armed drug barons. The area is notorious for cannabis sativa cultivation and illegal drug trade.

In reaction to the incident, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, visited the community to commiserate with the bereaved family and assess the situation.

A statement from Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the Commissioner met with the deceased’s parents, local leaders, and youths, assuring them of a comprehensive and impartial investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Benin City,” the statement read.

The police have since taken over the case to ensure fairness in uncovering the true circumstances surrounding the clash.

CP Agbonika also visited Godswill Memorial Nursing Centre in Uzeba, where the injured victims are being treated, promising justice and police support. Additionally, he visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

“The Command assures the public that updates will be communicated once credible findings emerge. Edo State Police Command remains committed to justice, peace, and the protection of lives and property,” the statement concluded.
