A coalition of Islamic scholars under the Concerned Ulama of Sunnah has formally petitioned the Kaduna State Government, alleging that two preachers made disrespectful remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) during their recent online sermons.
The petition, signed by sixteen Islamic clerics and led by Shaikh Umar Shehu Zaria and Malam Muhammad Sani Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Juma’at Mosque, Hayin Na’iya, called on the government to take urgent action to prevent possible unrest in the state.
According to the group, the alleged statements made by the preachers could incite serious tension if not promptly addressed. The clerics urged the government to either invite the preachers for a public debate or halt their preaching activities entirely, warning that inaction might escalate the situation.
“Our petition is not driven by personal grievances,” the scholars stated, “but by our religious duty to defend Islamic values and uphold the honour of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).”
They cited classical Islamic teachings emphasizing the gravity of blasphemy and the responsibility of Muslims to safeguard the Prophet’s dignity.
Responding to the development, Tahir Umar Tahir, the Director-General of the Kaduna State Bureau for Interfaith, confirmed that his office had received the petition on behalf of Governor Uba Sani.
“We received the petition and by God’s grace, the matter will be thoroughly investigated,” Tahir assured.
He further appealed to religious leaders across the state to exercise restraint and continue promoting peace, tolerance, and unity to prevent any form of sectarian tension or violence among residents.
The Kaduna State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the next steps, but sources within the Bureau for Interfaith Affairs say consultations are underway to diffuse tension and maintain inter-religious harmony across the state.
