Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has criticized what he described as the “emergency lovers of Nigeria” who invoke the nation’s sovereignty to shield corrupt politicians from accountability.

In a strongly worded statement, Effiong said those defending Nigeria’s sovereignty misunderstand it as a tool to protect the political elite rather than uphold the rights and dignity of ordinary citizens.

“They think sovereignty is only about allowing corrupt politicians to steal, kill and destroy without interference from foreign powers,” Effiong stated.

He further pointed out the irony of leaders who claim to defend national sovereignty yet rely on foreign medical facilities and accumulate loans that burden future generations.

“Your President does not seek medical care in Nigeria. Your governors, lawmakers and other government officials have mentally seceded from Nigeria. They only see this country as a special purpose vehicle for accumulating unearned wealth,” he said.

Effiong concluded that the concept of sovereignty has been “bastardized by generational indebtedness and corruption,” urging Nigerians to hold leaders accountable and demand genuine independence built on justice and integrity.
