Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take a firm stand against the recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly issued a warning suggesting possible military intervention in Nigeria.
Describing the statement as a “direct assault on Nigeria’s sovereignty and dignity,” Sheikh Gumi urged the Nigerian government to issue a swift and decisive diplomatic response to defend the nation’s independence and international standing.
“This is not the time for silence or weakness,” Gumi stated. “Nigeria must assert itself and make it clear that no foreign power has the right to threaten or interfere in our internal affairs.”
The cleric further advised the Tinubu administration to rally the support of the African Union (AU) and other global partners to condemn what he called an “unwarranted provocation” from Washington.
His comments come amid growing tension following Trump’s controversial remarks that have sparked widespread reactions from political and religious leaders across Nigeria.
