Chaos erupted this afternoon at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, as armed thugs allegedly loyal to suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, launched a violent attack on staff and journalists within the premises.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers—reportedly mobilized by Emmanuel Okoronkwo, a staff member aligned with Senator Anyanwu—stormed the Secretariat, chanting provocative slogans in support of Anyanwu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The invasion quickly turned violent as the thugs breached security barriers, vandalized offices, destroyed properties, and assaulted party staff and journalists covering the incident. At least five employees were seriously injured, while several reporters had their cameras and recording equipment destroyed in what witnesses described as an attempt to silence media coverage.
“They came in large numbers, over 50 of them, wielding weapons and shouting threats,” an eyewitness recounted. “They attacked staff, beat journalists, and broke office windows.”
This violent disruption comes just hours after Senator Anyanwu’s one-month suspension was announced by the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum. The suspension, alongside those of Hon. Umar Bature (National Organizing Secretary), Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN, National Legal Adviser), and Okechukwu Osuoha (Deputy National Legal Adviser), followed allegations of gross misconduct, insubordination, and anti-party activities under Sections 58 and 59 of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended).
In what the party described as a “retaliatory charade,” Anyanwu’s faction allegedly convened a parallel meeting to announce the purported suspension of Damagum, Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, while attempting to install Mohammed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman—an action the legitimate NWC has dismissed as illegal and void.
Party insiders condemned the attack as a criminal act and a dangerous escalation of internal conflict within the PDP.
“Senator Anyanwu’s desperation to cling to power has crossed into criminal territory,” a senior party official said. “This reckless violence endangers lives and undermines the trust of millions of PDP members.”
Security operatives were later deployed to the scene to restore order, while injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
