The Human Rights Civil Society Watch of Nigeria (HRCSWN) has expressed strong condemnation over the abduction of Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, a respected medical expert at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, who was reportedly kidnapped by armed men near Omatha Junction, Uruagu, Nnewi, shortly after performing several complex neurosurgical operations.
Dr. Mbanugo, widely recognized for his medical brilliance and humanitarian service, has been instrumental in saving countless lives through his delicate brain surgeries and commitment to patient care. His abduction marks another disturbing episode in the rising insecurity plaguing Nigeria’s South-East region.
In a statement released on Monday, Bar. Omo Precious, the Lagos State Coordinator of HRCSWN, called on the Nigerian government and security agencies to take swift, coordinated, and decisive action to ensure the safe and unconditional release of Dr. Mbanugo and to bring the perpetrators to justice through due legal process.
“The persistent failure of the authorities to tackle the worsening insecurity in the South-East has emboldened criminal networks and fostered a reign of impunity,” Bar. Omo Precious stated. “Between January 2021 and June 2023, no fewer than 1,844 people have been killed in the region due to unchecked violence and human rights abuses by both state and non-state actors. This must end.”
The organization reiterated that the Nigerian government has both a constitutional and moral responsibility to safeguard the lives and rights of its citizens, especially professionals serving the nation selflessly under challenging conditions. HRCSWN further urged for the immediate deployment of effective security strategies and comprehensive reforms to end the cycle of kidnappings, killings, and human rights violations across the country.
The statement was signed by Bar. Omo Precious, Lagos State Coordinator, Human Rights Civil Society Watch of Nigeria (HRCSWN), who reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advocating for justice, safety, and human rights across Nigeria.
