Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to launch a full and transparent investigation into the recent attack on Oriuzor community in Ezza-North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where at least two people were killed, dozens displaced, and several homes and vehicles set ablaze.
The rights organization described the assault, which occurred on November 1, 2025, as another tragic reminder of the government’s failure to protect rural populations from recurring violence.
Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed men stormed the community, shooting indiscriminately and torching residential buildings and vehicles. The incident has sparked widespread fear, forcing many villagers to flee to neighbouring areas for safety.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the attack as “a clear violation of the right to life and security”, adding that rural communities across Nigeria continue to live in fear of sudden assaults due to weak security presence and slow government response.
“The 1 November attack on Oriuzor is yet another indication of how communities in Nigeria’s hinterlands are left unprotected despite repeated warnings,” Amnesty said.
“The Nigerian government must take urgent steps to prevent further bloodshed and ensure justice for victims.”
The organization warned that the persistent insecurity has not only led to mass displacement but also worsened food insecurity, as farmers are now too afraid to return to their fields.
“Many families in the affected areas depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, but the constant threat of attacks keeps them away from their farms,” the statement added.
Amnesty International Nigeria urged both the federal and state governments to prioritize rural protection, deploy adequate security personnel, and bring the perpetrators of the Oriuzor attack to justice through fair and transparent legal proceedings.
