Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shiites, took to the streets of Kano on Saturday to protest against remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently threatened to invade Nigeria under the pretext of combating terrorism.

The protesters, numbering in their hundreds, marched through major roads in the city, carrying placards and banners rejecting Trump’s claim that a genocide against Christians was taking place in Nigeria. Some demonstrators were seen dragging the U.S. flag on the ground, while others displayed effigies of President Trump, expressing outrage over what they described as a deliberate attempt to sow division.

President Trump had earlier designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” alleging that Christians were being persecuted by terrorists and warning that the U.S. Department of War had been directed to prepare a potential military action plan if the Nigerian government failed to intervene.

Reacting to the statement, the IMN dismissed Trump’s remarks as false, inflammatory, and dangerous. In a press release signed by Abdullahi Danladi of the Movement’s Resource Forum, the group accused western nations of using propaganda to incite religious tension in Nigeria.

“Both Islam and Christianity teach similar moral values, but politicians and foreign interests exploit our differences for their own benefit,” Danladi said, emphasizing that Nigeria’s real challenges stem from corruption and political greed, not religion.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has also rejected the genocide claims, insisting that terrorist attacks in the country are indiscriminate and not targeted at any particular religious group.

As the protest concluded peacefully, observers noted that the demonstration reflects the growing domestic backlash against foreign narratives that could potentially heighten Nigeria’s already fragile unity.
