In a groundbreaking move for Nigerian sports, Lagos State has entered into a historic partnership with Abbey Rangers Football Club, a leading community football team based in the United Kingdom.
The collaboration, officially unveiled by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), marks the first-ever formal alliance between a Nigerian state and a UK community club, setting a new benchmark for grassroots football development and international talent exchange.
Built on seven strategic pillars, the partnership focuses on talent discovery, coaching development, sports science, and community engagement, while also introducing exchange programmes, mentorships, and certification opportunities for young athletes, coaches, and sports administrators.
Director-General of the LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, hailed the initiative as “a deliberate effort to connect Lagos with global best practices in grassroots football development.” He credited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision and support for creating pathways that empower young people through sport.
Chairman of Abbey Rangers, Mr. Nick Riley, described the partnership as “a bridge between cultures and a platform for inclusion, opportunity, and global connection.”
This alliance reinforces Lagos State’s leadership in sports innovation and youth empowerment, aligning perfectly with the governor’s #AGreaterLagosRising agenda — a blueprint for building a dynamic and globally connected Lagos through sports and community development.
