As voting commenced across Anambra State for the governorship election, a striking picture of youth apathy unfolded in parts of Awka, where many young people chose to play football or run their businesses instead of heading to the polls.

While markets quietly reopened and traders attended to customers, several streets in the capital buzzed with football matches — a scene that reflected a muted enthusiasm for the political process.

In Okpuno and Mgbakwu, voter turnout was slow, with residents trickling in for accreditation under the watch of security personnel. In Uruotulu, Awka, a mobile town crier drove through the streets, using a loudspeaker to encourage citizens to come out and vote.

At Polling Units 004 and 005, Umuobi Village Hall, Awkuzu, voters were already queuing as of 8:54 a.m., though official voting had yet to begin. Security officers maintained visible presence at polling stations, confirming that the environment remained peaceful and orderly with no reported disturbances.

Meanwhile, business activity thrived as food vendors, shop owners, and petty traders served both voters and spectators — turning the day’s civic duty into an opportunity for small-scale commerce.

The election, featuring key political contenders, continues under a mix of civic participation and visible youth disengagement, underscoring a persistent challenge: how to rekindle political interest among young Nigerians, many of whom see politics as distant from their everyday realities.
