The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has accused members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of operating fake social media accounts disguised as foreigners to manipulate public opinion and spread misinformation about Nigeria.

Bwala, in a statement shared on his social media handle, alleged that IPOB members have been using photos of white men and women with foreign-sounding names to impersonate Americans and Europeans reacting to Nigerian issues.

“Funny, IPOB members using white men and women faces with names sounding foreign to populate Twitter and Facebook purporting to be Americans reacting to issues,” he said.

He claimed that the intention behind these fake profiles is to create the false impression of international concern and support for the group’s agenda.

Bwala also mentioned a particular individual whom he identified as Elias Gerasoulis, accusing him of leading online attacks while pretending to be an American.

“One criminal by the name Elias Gerasoulis is all over attacking people and suggesting he is a white man in Washington,” Bwala alleged.

According to him, IPOB supporters are angered because they have been exposed as the people behind what he described as a false campaign about a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

“They are angered by the fact that we exposed them as elements behind the hoax Christian genocide,” he said.

Bwala further claimed that international media organisations, including Reuters and the BBC, had also discovered and reported on the alleged deception.

“Reuters, BBC and others as well found them out in that deception,” he added.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group seeking an independent Biafra Republic, has often been accused by Nigerian authorities of spreading propaganda online, though the group maintains that its advocacy is peaceful and legitimate.

Bwala, a lawyer and political analyst before joining the Tinubu administration, currently serves as Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication.
