In a brutal night raid on 11 November 2025, gunmen struck Gidan Waya in Yarkasuwa, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing four residents and abducting twelve others, including children aged 13, 14, and 15.
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as yet another example of the Nigerian authorities’ failure to protect lives and ensure accountability for human rights violations. The organisation noted that rural communities across northern Nigeria have been living in fear since 2016, with violent attacks and abductions forcing many families, especially farmers, to flee their homes.
According to Amnesty, this latest incident highlights a growing crisis in several northern states, particularly in Plateau, Zamfara, southern Kaduna, Benue, and Katsina, where communities continue to face repeated violence from armed groups.
The human rights organisation urged authorities to take immediate and effective action to protect citizens and bring perpetrators to justice, stressing that prolonged inaction only deepens insecurity and suffering in affected communities.
Key Quote:
“Another indication of the stunning failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and ensure accountability for all human rights crimes,” Amnesty International said, adding that “since 2016, rural communities in some parts of northern Nigeria have been living at the mercy of gunmen.”
This attack underscores the urgent need for coordinated security measures and stronger government intervention to safeguard vulnerable populations in northern Nigeria.
