The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states has raised alarm over what it describes as the “systematic and targeted” killings of Christians across Northern Nigeria, declaring that the violence amounts to genocide.

In a strongly worded statement, the regional Christian body said the continuous slaughter of innocent believers and destruction of Christian communities had gone beyond random insecurity and now reflected a deliberate attempt to wipe out Christian populations in the region.

CAN described as “a grave injustice” any attempt to deny or downplay the reality of Christian genocide, stressing that such denial dishonours the memories of those who have lost their lives and undermines efforts to ensure justice and protection for survivors.

The association called on both the Nigerian government and the international community to formally recognize the situation as genocide and to take decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“This is not mere insecurity; it is genocide,” a CAN representative said. “The denial of Christian genocide is an injustice to victims and the faith community.”

CAN’s statement reflects growing frustration among northern Christians who say they have been repeatedly targeted in attacks by armed groups, with little or no accountability from authorities.

By describing the killings as genocide, the northern Christian body has added new urgency to calls for stronger government intervention, justice for victims, and global attention to the crisis facing faith communities in Northern Nigeria.
