In a swift and courageous operation, troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), North East Operation HADIN KAI, on Tuesday night rescued seventy-four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from what could have been a mass abduction by Boko Haram terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State.
According to military sources, the rescue occurred at about 9:05 p.m. on November 11, 2025, after surveillance systems detected suspicious movement involving three buses in the area, a notorious hotspot for kidnappings. Troops were immediately deployed and discovered 74 stranded corps members — 36 males and 38 females — whose vehicles had broken down.
The soldiers promptly secured the scene and evacuated the corps members to safety, effectively preventing a possible abduction by terrorists who were believed to be operating in the vicinity.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the NYSC members had earlier been escorted from Maiduguri to Damaturu by troops of the 7 Division Garrison. However, they continued their journey to Hawul Local Government Area without notifying Sector 2 Headquarters or obtaining additional military escort.
It was gathered that the corps members were on an evangelical mission to Hawul when their buses developed mechanical faults, leaving them vulnerable before the troops intervened.
The rescued corps members are currently being accommodated at the military base in Buratai, while arrangements are underway to ensure their safe movement to their final destination.
The Military High Command and the Borno State Government have commended the troops for their vigilance, professionalism, and timely response that averted what could have been another tragic incident.
Authorities have also urged members of the public, particularly those traveling through volatile areas in the North East, to always seek security clearance and coordination with the military before embarking on night journeys.
This incident underscores the continued security challenges in parts of Borno State, where insurgents remain active despite military efforts to stabilize the region. It also highlights the need for stricter travel coordination and risk management for NYSC members and civilians operating in high-risk zones.
