President Bola Tinubu has authorized Nigeria to take part in the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, a initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries to improve security and other key areas. This decision follows Nigeria’s recent high-level visit to Washington, DC, where both nations agreed to establish the group to foster closer collaboration.
Leading Nigeria’s team will be National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, supported by senior officials from various government agencies. The group includes key ministers such as the Foreign Affairs Minister, the Defence Minister, the Interior Minister, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs. Top security officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, and the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force, will also be part of the team.
Supporting personnel from Nigeria’s government include Ms. Idayat Hassan from the Office of the National Security Adviser and Mr. Paul Alabi from the Nigerian Embassy in the US, who will serve as the secretariat for the group.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of diligent cooperation between Nigeria and the US to ensure the successful implementation of agreements across various sectors. The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, on November 27, 2025.
