Security and intelligence expert, Kabir Adamu, has cautioned young Nigerians romanticizing the idea of military coups, stressing that such sentiments reflect a limited understanding of the true consequences of military intervention in governance.

Adamu expressed concern over the recent trend where a section of Gen Zs on social media openly praise past military regimes or call for military takeovers in moments of political or economic frustration. According to him, these nostalgic or speculative views ignore the historical realities of repression, human rights abuses, and economic setbacks that typically accompany military rule.

He warned that Nigeria’s democratic progression—though imperfect—remains far more beneficial than the instability and brutality associated with past juntas. Adamu highlighted that countries currently experiencing coups in Africa are grappling with deeper insecurity, weakened institutions, and worsening economic conditions, contrary to the imagined “quick fixes” many young people hope for.

The security expert urged Nigerians, especially younger citizens, to channel their dissatisfaction toward constructive democratic engagement: demanding accountability, participating in elections, pushing civic reforms, and strengthening institutions rather than craving unconstitutional shortcuts.

He emphasized that democracy only flourishes when citizens commit to protecting it and when grievances are addressed through lawful, inclusive, and sustainable reforms—not through the destabilizing appeal of military intervention.
