The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested three alleged members of the notorious “Sai Malam” cult group during a coordinated Friday night raid led by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit. The operation follows rising public concern over the cult’s activities and growing influence in several parts of the state.
Police spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufai confirmed that the main suspect, Usman Shu’aibu, and two other accomplices have already made confessional statements. Preliminary investigations revealed that the group ran a covert online recruitment cell via a WhatsApp channel known as the “Red Chamber,” which was reportedly used to lure young people into criminal behaviour.
According to police findings, the cult’s activities include “witchcraft and ritualist practices, the pursuit of demonic powers, acts of homosexuality, organized thuggery and violence.” The Command said more arrests are expected as operatives intensify efforts to track other members of the organisation who are currently at large.
Assuring residents of persistence in the security crackdown, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa stated: “The arrest of these suspects is a clear demonstration that their calls for action have been answered… we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen.” The Police Command urged parents to closely monitor their children’s online engagements and encouraged the public to provide credible intelligence to support ongoing security operations.
