The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man over his alleged involvement in a kidnapping operation in Abia State, in what authorities describe as part of an ongoing crackdown on violent crime across the state.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the suspect was apprehended following an intelligence-led operation conducted by police operatives in Umuahia and surrounding areas. The operation also led to the rescue of a kidnapped victim who had been held by the suspects before police intervention.

Police authorities confirmed that ₦830,000, reportedly paid as ransom by the victim’s family, was recovered during the operation. The money is believed to have been traced to the suspects as part of efforts to dismantle the kidnapping network linked to the case.

Security sources said the arrest followed sustained surveillance and coordinated tactical movement by operatives, who were acting on credible intelligence about the location of the victim and the suspected kidnappers. The victim was reportedly found alive and taken for medical evaluation after the rescue.

The police did not immediately release the identity of the suspect, but confirmed that he is 52 years old and is currently in custody assisting investigators with information relevant to the wider kidnapping network under investigation.

Officials also indicated that the case may not be isolated, suggesting that the suspect could be part of a broader criminal structure involved in kidnapping-for-ransom activities within parts of Abia State. Investigators are currently pursuing additional suspects believed to have fled the scene.

In recent months, Abia State has recorded several anti-kidnapping operations, including arrests, rescue missions, and recoveries of ransom money, as security agencies intensify efforts to curb abduction-related crimes across the region.

Police authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal groups operating within the state, while urging residents to provide timely intelligence to support ongoing security operations.

As of the time of reporting, the suspect remains in custody and is expected to be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Stone Reporters note that the case adds to a growing list of kidnapping-related arrests in southeastern Nigeria, where security agencies have increasingly focused on intelligence-led raids targeting ransom networks.
