A faction of the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended party chieftain and former Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, alongside 23 other members over alleged anti-party activities and violations of the party’s constitution. The decision marks the latest development in the prolonged internal crisis rocking the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The suspension was announced on Friday, May 29, 2026, in a statement issued by the faction’s disciplinary committee and signed by its Chairman, Elder Kayode Ogunbiyi, and Secretary, Barrister Desmond Agbo. According to the committee, the action followed a disciplinary meeting held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, where several petitions alleging anti-party activities and deliberate breaches of the PDP constitution were reviewed.

“The decision to suspend George and other erring members was contained in the resolution of the meeting held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, where various petitions were presented against certain notable personalities and other members bordering on issues of anti-party activities and deliberate infractions of the PDP Constitution,” the statement said. The committee stated that the party could no longer tolerate actions capable of creating division and disaffection among members.

The disciplinary committee also said it reviewed what it described as an earlier disciplinary action allegedly taken against Bode George by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). According to the statement, the committee reaffirmed that George “remains suspended as earlier pronounced.”

Among the other party members affected by the suspension are Chief (Mrs.) Aduke Maina, Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, Mr. Laja Adeoye, Capt. Tunji Shele, Chief Sunday Olaifa, Mr. Gbenga Adegbesan, Hon. Rita Orji, Mrs. Kofoworola Bucknor, Chief (Mrs.) Onikepo-Oshodi, Mrs. Idera Sodipo, Prince Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, Hon. Bode Ogundipe, Hon. Aminu Suleiman, Dr. Roli George, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, Mr. Adeyemi Moyegun, Chief Taiwo Kuye, Mrs. Coker, Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, Alhaji Muritala Ashorobi, Mr. Dare, Dr. Amos Alabi Fawole, and Hon. Olumuyiwa Owodara Richard

According to the committee, some of the affected members were accused of collaborating with rival political parties, engaging in unauthorized political activities and acting against the interests of the PDP in Lagos State. The committee said investigations into the petitions revealed conduct it considered detrimental to party unity and discipline.

The suspension deepens an already existing leadership struggle within the Lagos PDP, where rival factions have repeatedly disagreed over party control, alliances and strategy ahead of future elections. In recent months, divisions have intensified between groups loyal to Chief Bode George and those aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who remains one of the most influential figures within sections of the PDP despite ongoing disputes over his relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Earlier in May 2026, the Lagos PDP leadership publicly distanced itself from reported coalition discussions involving the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), accusing individuals linked to the Bode George camp of creating confusion within the party. The state leadership claimed that some members associated with George had repeatedly acted against party interests during critical political periods.

Ironically, the latest suspension comes only days after Bode George publicly called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with a Supreme Court judgment relating to the PDP’s internal leadership disputes. In a statement issued on Friday, May 29, 2026, George argued that constitutional procedures within the party must be respected and accused certain political actors of attempting to destabilize the opposition.

As of Saturday, May 30, 2026, Bode George had not officially responded to the suspension announcement. Reports indicated that attempts by journalists to reach him for comments were unsuccessful, as phone calls reportedly did not connect and messages remained undelivered at the time of publication.

The disciplinary committee stated that all suspended members are barred from participating in PDP activities in Lagos State and can no longer represent the party in any official or unofficial capacity. The committee further warned that legal action could be initiated against any suspended member who continues to act contrary to the interests of the party.

Political observers say the development highlights the deepening divisions within the PDP as the party continues efforts to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 elections. Stone Reporters note that internal conflicts, factional disputes and competing leadership claims remain among the biggest challenges facing the opposition party at both state and national levels.
