Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has confirmed the end of his marriage to Halima Nwakaego Kazaure, daughter of former Jigawa State senator Ibrahim Kazaure, after about five years of marriage, while also indicating plans to remarry later in the year.
The development gained public attention following a series of posts made by Bashir on X (formerly Twitter) during the Eid celebrations in late May 2026, where he openly expressed admiration for another woman. His comments triggered widespread reactions online, with users questioning the status of his marriage.
In subsequent exchanges on the platform, Bashir confirmed that he was no longer married to Halima, stating that the marriage had been dissolved. He attributed the separation to personal differences, writing in a post: “I divorced my first wife. I have no time for Gen Z wahala,” a statement that further intensified public debate and commentary across social media platforms.
He also made remarks comparing relationship dynamics, suggesting a preference for his current partner, whom he described as his fiancée. “The difference is clear. I had no clue Nupe women treat their husbands like emperors. Loving it,” he added, a comment that drew mixed reactions from users online.
Bashir and Halima were married on November 21, 2020, in a ceremony that attracted attention due to the political and elite backgrounds of both families. The marriage had largely remained private, though occasional public discussions involving either party had previously sparked speculation about tension within the union.
Prior to the confirmation of the divorce, Halima Nwakaego had on several occasions appeared in online discussions referencing relationship controversies involving other public figures. During a previous public dispute involving media personality Frank Edoho and his wife, she had made social media posts that many interpreted as commentary on marital disagreements, though she did not directly reference her own marriage at the time.
In one widely circulated post, she shared a photo of herself listening to singer Chike’s “If You No Love” in her car, captioning it “Chike dey for you,” a message that at the time generated online debate about its possible subtext in relation to ongoing celebrity relationship discussions.
Bashir El-Rufai’s announcement has since generated significant online reactions, particularly due to the informal manner in which the divorce was disclosed on social media rather than through formal family or legal statements. The development has also reignited broader conversations about privacy, public conduct, and the influence of social media on personal relationships among public figures and politically exposed families.
As of Saturday, May 30, 2026, neither Halima Nwakaego Kazaure nor representatives of the Kazaure or El-Rufai families had issued an official public statement regarding the divorce confirmation or Bashir’s remarriage plans.
