Suspected bandits stormed the rural community of Rinji Idi in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State on the night of Saturday, May 30, 2026, killing two residents and leaving another with varying degrees of injury. The attack, which occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m., has deepened the climate of fear in an area already reeling from repeated violent incursions. According to local sources who spoke to Stone Reporters News, the armed assailants arrived in large numbers, shooting sporadically as they moved through the village. The victims were reportedly caught in the crossfire as residents scrambled for safety. The injured victim was rushed to a medical facility and is said to be responding to treatment.

Community members have expressed profound grief and frustration, calling on both the Katsina State Government and security agencies to end the persistent insecurity that has turned rural life in the Matazu axis into a daily struggle for survival. Rinji Idi has been one of several communities in the area that have suffered repeated attacks, with residents previously petitioning the governor over the deteriorating situation. The attack comes amid a wider surge in banditry across Katsina State, which has seen mass abductions, reprisal killings and displacement of farming communities. On the same day as the Rinji Idi raid, suspected bandits carried out a separate attack in the Kiliya community of Dutsinma Local Government Area, where at least 16 people were feared dead during Eid‑el‑Kabir celebrations, in what sources described as a reprisal for the earlier killing of two suspected bandits by villagers.

The Katsina State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the Rinji Idi incident, and no arrest has been reported. Residents are demanding urgent reinforcement of security personnel in the area and a more proactive approach to intelligence gathering. The state government has repeatedly promised to strengthen the capacity of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (C‑Watch) and other security agencies, but locals say the pace of change has been too slow to protect vulnerable communities. As the injured victim recovers and families bury their dead, the people of Rinji Idi are left to wonder when the next night of gunfire will come – and who will be next.
