The Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, made a heartfelt appeal to residents on Sunday, May 31, 2026, asking them to forgive the shortcomings of his administration and to support all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. The governor made this plea during a Democracy Thanksgiving Service held at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki to mark the third anniversary of his administration, an event also attended by political heavyweights, including former governors and the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

During his address, Governor Nwifuru acknowledged that his government, alongside members of the National Assembly and the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, may have made mistakes while serving the people. He therefore called on citizens to overlook those shortcomings and renew their confidence in their elected representatives. "Please forgive us; forgive me and the National Assembly members and the House of Assembly members," Nwifuru implored the congregation. "Forgive our shortcomings and vote for us again".

Reflecting on three years in office, the governor stressed that governance is a continuous learning process requiring humility, commitment, and public support, noting that no administration can claim perfection. He assured residents that his administration remains focused on improving service delivery, expanding infrastructure, and ensuring the benefits of democracy reach more communities across the state.

The governor's plea comes just days after he officially secured the APC's governorship ticket for the 2027 election. On May 23, 2026, the party's primary election committee declared Nwifuru the winner of the governorship primary, having polled 199,483 votes. This was part of the party's wider adoption of consensus candidates for all elective positions in the state, a strategy aimed at consolidating its base ahead of the polls.

The thanksgiving service and appeal drew a host of prominent political leaders. Among the attendees were the immediate past governor of the state and current Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, as well as former Governor Martin Elechi. Also present were serving senators, members of the National Assembly, state lawmakers, and various government officials. The gathering of political heavyweights under one roof signals a concerted effort by the party leadership to maintain unity and ensure a smooth electoral campaign.

Despite the emotional appeal, Nwifuru's tenure has not been without controversy. Just days before the thanksgiving service, the minister of works, Senator David Umahi, reportedly faulted Nwifuru’s proposed “consensus arrangement” for all elective offices, leading to palpable tensions within the state chapter of the APC. The governor’s call for forgiveness may therefore be an attempt to mend fences not only with the electorate but also with powerful party stakeholders, as the 2027 election cycle gathers full momentum.
