A 27‑year‑old Nigerian man, Qudus Ajeyemi, has been convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault at Hull Crown Court in the United Kingdom, following an incident in which he ignored a woman’s repeated refusals and tried to force himself on her while she was intoxicated. On Friday, 29 May 2026, a jury found Ajeyemi guilty of attempted rape by a 10‑2 majority verdict and guilty of sexual assault by a unanimous decision. The court heard that Ajeyemi, a former resident of May Street off Beverley Road in Hull and more recently living in Manchester, had followed a woman upstairs during a night out after she became unwell and went to lie down.

Prosecutor Charlotte Baines told the court that Ajeyemi, who also used the nickname “Spartan”, and others had been invited to a “party” night out in Hull, including at a club. The victim had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, including champagne and vodka, and began to feel unwell. She went upstairs in the house to rest and fell asleep. Ajeyemi followed her into the bedroom, where he began to touch her intimately. Despite her clear protests – telling him she was “not here for that” and instructing him to stop – he persisted. He removed her underwear and his own trousers in an attempt to rape her while holding her down. The woman fought back and, during the struggle, was pushed off the bed before she fled downstairs in distress.

The prosecution described the victim’s evidence as compelling and reliable. Ajeyemi later sealed his own fate when he agreed to a FaceTime call with the victim, during which he confessed that what he had done was wrong and repeatedly apologised. He also sent her text messages begging for forgiveness. In police interviews, however, he denied the attempted rape, claiming that the pair had only kissed and cuddled and that he had stopped when she said no.

Ajeyemi, who had no previous convictions in the UK and was in the country as an international student, was remanded in custody following the verdicts. He had been on bail during the trial. The victim initially hesitated to report the incident, concerned about the potential impact on Ajeyemi’s education and visa status, but ultimately came forward out of fear that he might offend against someone else. Sentencing is expected in the coming weeks. Authorities said the conviction marks the conclusion of a case that drew attention within the local community and among international student circles in the United Kingdom, and that the outcome sends a clear message that sexual offences will be prosecuted regardless of the offender’s immigration status.
