A Nigerian girl identified only as Ngufan, who was reportedly trafficked to Mali, has died under circumstances that are yet to be clarified, according to accounts shared by an anti-human trafficking activist.

The incident was disclosed on June 21, 2026, in a Facebook post by activist Zege Orkwande, who stated that the victim may have been among several young women trafficked from Nigeria to Mali. Orkwande, known for involvement in the rescue of trafficked girls from Benue State to various West African countries, said efforts were ongoing to trace the deceased’s family and confirm further details surrounding her death.

According to the post, the circumstances leading to Ngufan’s death remain unknown, and there has been no official confirmation from Nigerian or Malian authorities regarding the case at the time of filing this report.

The activist appealed to members of the public who may recognize the deceased or have information about her relatives to come forward to assist in identifying her family and facilitating communication with relevant authorities.

Human trafficking remains a persistent cross-border challenge affecting vulnerable individuals, particularly young women and girls, who are often lured or coerced into exploitative situations across parts of West and North Africa.

Nigeria has continued to collaborate with regional and international partners in efforts to combat trafficking networks, while advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger protection mechanisms, improved border monitoring, and faster response systems for victims abroad.

As of now, details such as the exact location of death in Mali, the circumstances leading to the incident, and official verification of identity have not been independently confirmed.

Authorities and anti-trafficking organizations are expected to continue investigations and outreach efforts as they work to establish the facts and locate the victim’s family.
