MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2026 — The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of an unspecified number of students writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations and their teachers, after suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Askira/Uba Local Government Area on Monday morning.

The attack occurred between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on a busy market day, throwing the community into chaos as heavily armed insurgents, reportedly dressed in military camouflage and forest guard uniforms and riding motorcycles, swept through the town. The Government Day Secondary School is situated less than 500 metres from a military base.

Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters, stating that the attack was a terrorist act. "At about 9 a.m., an unspecified number of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists attacked a secondary school and shot sporadically into the air," Daso said. He added that security operatives engaged the attackers, preventing a larger-scale abduction.

Eyewitnesses reported that at least one teacher was shot dead during the assault. According to the President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, the attackers killed one teacher from Chibok and shot another, who survived. An examination officer was also killed, and another teacher was shot in the neck. Residents also claimed that a female student was shot in the mouth.

The assailants abducted an unspecified number of students and several women selling food within the school premises. One teacher, reportedly the Vice Principal, was also abducted alongside the students. Most of the abducted students were female.

Security sources alleged that the attackers exploited a suspicious security vacuum. According to a senior security agent, the military commander at the Lassa camp assembled soldiers and departed for a patrol in Dille village, about seven kilometres away, less than five minutes before the attack began. The soldiers reportedly left on a patrol to nearby Uba, about 16 kilometres from Lassa, just before the insurgents struck.

Security operatives, including the military, police, and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation and are combing the surrounding forests. The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, confirmed that seven of the abducted students have been rescued. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining abductees.

This attack comes just weeks after 42 students and pupils were abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in the same local government area on May 15, 2026.
