The Delta State Police Command has charged a suspect to court over the alleged murder of Bishop Chinedu Okonkwo, a cleric who was killed in his residence in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area, on May 12, 2026. The suspect, identified as the bishop's driver, was arrested the following day by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command while attempting to sell the victim's Land Cruiser Jeep at Akwuzo.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement sent to DAILY POST on Monday, June 29, 2026. According to Edafe, the suspect was handed over to the Delta State Police Command after preliminary investigation by the Anambra command, and further inquiry revealed a pattern of criminal behaviour predating the murder. “The suspect before carrying out this act was earlier employed by a company in Rivers State. While working there, he made away with their vehicle, a 2016 model Toyota Corolla, sold it and disappeared,” Edafe disclosed.
The suspect has since been charged to court for suspected murder, bringing a measure of legal progress to a case that had sent shockwaves through the religious community in Delta State.
Bishop Clarence Chinedu Okonkwo, who led the End-Reconciliation Ministry in Asaba, was killed inside his residence in Ibusa, near Asaba. According to police sources, the prime suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Obiagwu, who worked as the bishop’s driver and domestic staff, allegedly attacked his employer with a wooden pestle, striking him on the head before fleeing with the cleric’s Toyota Land Cruiser SUV, mobile phones, and other valuables. The suspect also reportedly conspired with yet-to-be-identified accomplices to carry out the murder before escaping to Anambra State.
Investigations revealed that Obiagwu had a prior criminal record. Before his employment with the bishop, he had worked for a company in Rivers State, where he allegedly stole a 2016 model Toyota Corolla, sold it, and disappeared. The bishop, unaware of his driver's past, had given him a second chance, a gesture of trust that ultimately cost him his life.
The killing of Bishop Okonkwo has left the community in shock and mourning. A respected religious leader, his death has raised concerns about the safety of clergy and the growing prevalence of violence against trusted domestic staff. The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has also been affected, as the bishop served as its Secretary.
As the legal process unfolds, the suspect faces prosecution for the murder of a man who had trusted him. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of misplaced trust and the need for thorough background checks, even for those closest to us.
