Tension has gripped Uduere community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State following the gruesome murder of a security guard and the abduction of his 14-year-old daughter by suspected kidnappers. The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026, just a week after herdsmen attacked and macheted a young man in the neighbouring Edjekota community.
The deceased, Umukoro Obukohwo Emmanuel, was a security guard at a poultry farm in the community. According to sources, he was macheted to death in a brutal attack, with one of his hands chopped off and his neck ferociously severed. The assailants then broke into his apartment and abducted his teenage daughter.
A community source said the kidnappers appeared to have followed the victim to his place of work. "It looks like the deceased was followed to his place of work. Just as he opened the gate of the compound, the kidnappers took advantage and killed him. After they had successfully killed the man, they broke into the apartment to carry out their mission. While they were breaking the burglary, the innocent young girl came out of her room to know what was happening, and immediately she came out, the kidnappers took her away."
Another community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed deep frustration over the worsening security situation, accusing community leaders of playing politics with the lives of residents. The source disclosed that the community had previously established an internal security outfit, but it was disbanded after some individuals expressed discomfort with its operations.
"Before now the community had an internal security outfit, but because it was not comfortable with some persons, they disbanded it, and this is what we are now experiencing. Some leaders are playing politics with the lives of Uduere community people. The Nigerian Constitution provides right to life, but as it is now, some persons are taking our lives for granted."
The source called on the Delta State Government to prioritise the safety of the Uduere community, adding: "We are calling on the Delta State government to prioritise the safety of Uduere community people, as life has no part two or duplicate."
Further investigations revealed that the kidnappers have contacted the family of the teenager and are demanding a ransom of N100 million for her release.
Efforts to contact the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to his line were not returned. However, a security source attached to the Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident and assured that the police were on top of the situation. "We are on top of the situation, as the police are on the trail of the hoodlums," the source said.
