A viral video showing two young men physically assaulting a female police officer and an elderly male officer in Benin City has sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate over the relationship between civilians and law enforcement in Nigeria.
The incident occurred along Upper Sakponba Road, a busy axis in the Edo State capital. According to local accounts, the violent confrontation erupted during what appeared to be a routine traffic or enforcement engagement. Footage shared by Instablog9ja on Monday, June 29, 2026, shows a chaotic scene in which the two young men bypassed the instructions of officers on duty, violently shoving and striking a female officer who attempted to de-escalate the situation.
The confrontation turned more brutal when one of the youths advanced on an elderly male officer, disregarding his age and uniform to unleash a series of heavy punches to his face, forcing the bloodied operative to stagger backward as onlookers recorded the scene without intervening. The video also captures a female police officer attempting to intervene before she was pushed to the ground by another male civilian; she was later helped up by a female colleague.
The exact cause of the altercation has not been officially established. However, the footage has triggered intense debate, with many condemning the assault and warning of legal consequences for those involved.
“We cannot cure police brutality with citizen lawlessness,” an Edo-based human rights attorney told 247ureports. “If officers misbehave, there are statutory channels to report, track, and document them for disciplinary action. But the moment you start raining blows on an elderly officer and assaulting a woman in uniform, you have transitioned from a victim into a violent felon. The law must take its full course”.
On social media, users expressed outrage. @AbujaxQueen wrote, “I just hope this guys root in jail, how on earth will u be hitting women police?”. @ashman_babane cautioned, “Never get into a physical or verbal confrontation with a law enforcement officer in uniform. The consequences can be severe”.
Some commentators offered alternative perspectives, with @AyoKrissyOmonla suggesting, “But these are just traffic police, these guys no too get wahala like that .. simple dialogue would have resolved this”. However, the overwhelming reaction online condemned the violence, with many insisting that grievances against the police should be resolved through lawful channels rather than physical combat.
The Edo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, observers have called on the command to move swiftly to analyse the video, identify the assailants, and arrest them for assault on federal officers and obstruction of justice. The incident has renewed public discussion over attacks on security personnel and the strained relationship between civilians and law enforcement in Nigeria.
