In a swift response to a late-night raid, officers of the Dutsin-Ma Police Division successfully repelled suspected bandits who attacked Wakaji village in Katsina State, foiling a cattle rustling operation and preventing what could have been a larger tragedy. The incident occurred on the night of Monday, June 29, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed the community in an apparent bid to steal livestock, according to security sources.
The assailants, who arrived in large numbers, fired sporadically to scare off residents and gain control of the village. However, police operatives attached to the Dutsin-Ma Division received intelligence on the attack and mobilised immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, they engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, forcing the attackers to abandon several of the rustled cattle, which scattered into nearby bushes.
Despite the firepower of the assailants, the police successfully disrupted their operation. During the exchange, one of the bandits was shot and wounded, while a villager sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The injured resident was quickly stabilised and is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Dutsin-Ma. Reports from the scene indicate that the bandits managed to escape with about 10 cattle, but the prompt intervention of the security forces prevented a more substantial loss of livestock and likely saved lives.
The Katsina State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the operation, but a security source confirmed the details of the encounter. The source praised the officers for their bravery and rapid response, noting that such swift action is critical in mitigating the impact of bandit attacks in the region. “The prompt response by the Dutsin-Ma Police Division is commendable and shows the importance of rapid intervention in mitigating attacks and protecting lives,” the source said.
The attack on Wakaji village comes amid a worrying surge in banditry and cattle rustling across Katsina State, which has become a flashpoint for insecurity in Nigeria's North-West. In recent weeks, several communities have come under assault by armed groups, leading to loss of lives, displacement, and the theft of hundreds of livestock. The Katsina State Government, in collaboration with security agencies, has intensified efforts to combat these crimes, but attacks continue to occur, particularly in remote and rural areas.
Residents of Wakaji have expressed gratitude to the police for their rapid intervention, although they remain anxious about the possibility of reprisal attacks. The community, like many others in the state, relies heavily on farming and cattle rearing for its livelihood, and the persistent threat of banditry has severely impacted economic activities and the psychological well-being of the people. Security analysts have warned that the increasing sophistication of bandit groups, including their use of advanced weaponry and tactics, poses a significant challenge to law enforcement agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts were ongoing to track the fleeing suspects and recover the remaining stolen cattle. The Katsina State Police Command has appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to assist in the fight against criminality. The operation at Wakaji village stands as a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the critical role of community cooperation in tackling insecurity in the North-West.
