The Delta State Police Command has debunked reports alleging that bandits invaded Ibusa community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, describing the claims as false and urging the public to disregard the misinformation.
Rumours circulating on social media had claimed that armed bandits were operating in the community, with reports suggesting that students and other residents were seen running home in fear following the alleged sighting of the attackers. However, the police dismissed the reports after verification, confirming that there was no bandit attack or security breach in Ibusa.
Residents of the community also corroborated the police's position, stating that the reports were a false alarm that unnecessarily created panic among members of the public. The command urged citizens to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that false security alerts can cause fear, disrupt normal activities, and divert the attention of security agencies from genuine emergencies.
The police further encouraged the public to verify sensitive information through official channels before sharing it, reiterating their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents across Delta State.
"Spreading falsehood rumours just to cause panic does no good to us collectively," SP Bright Edafe, the command's Police Public Relations Officer, said in a post on X on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
The incident in Ibusa follows a similar pattern of unsubstantiated security alerts that have occasionally emerged in parts of Delta State, fuelling anxiety among residents. Security agencies have consistently warned against the dangers of misinformation, stressing that false reports can erode public trust and undermine community-police cooperation.
As part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order, the Delta State Police Command has encouraged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities through official communication channels rather than relying on unverified social media posts. The police have also reiterated their readiness to respond to genuine security threats and protect lives and property across the state.
