The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Nigerian Army recruits allegedly involved in the reported sexual assault of female students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo. In a statement jointly signed by its Chairperson, Comrade Abisola Ariwodola, and Secretary, Oluwaranti Ojewumi, the association condemned the alleged incident, describing it as a serious case of sexual and gender-based violence.
NAWOJ's demand comes amid widespread outrage over the alleged assault of female students by personnel from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo. Reports indicate that the recruits, who were said to be part of a batch that had their passing-out parade last Saturday, allegedly invaded student hostels in areas around the university community, physically assaulted male students, intimidated residents, and subjected some female students to degrading treatment.
In a statement, NAWOJ described the alleged actions as a violation of the victims' fundamental human rights and a betrayal of the public trust reposed in security institutions. The association warned that such conduct, if proven, undermines the integrity of the military and erodes public confidence in the country's security architecture.
"The Nigerian Army must not shield any of its personnel found culpable. Those responsible must face the full wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent," the association stated.
NAWOJ also called on the Federal Government, the Chief of Army Staff, the Osun State Government, and the National Human Rights Commission to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident. The association stressed the need for justice for the victims and urged authorities to implement measures that would prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The association further appealed to the university management and security agencies to ensure the safety of students and staff, while also calling on parents and guardians to remain vigilant. NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of women's rights and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence are held accountable.
