At least 37 students remain unaccounted for following Monday's attack on Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, according to parents who spoke with news outlets on Tuesday.
Suspected ISWAP terrorists stormed the school at about 9 a.m. on June 29, 2026, while candidates were writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination. The attackers, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, shot sporadically, killed two teachers, and abducted an unspecified number of students.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, supported by air platforms, conducted a coordinated search-and-rescue operation, successfully rescuing 10 victims—including students and a teacher—unhurt. During the encounter, two security operatives—a soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force—were killed.
Following the attack, the Borno State Government opened a register for families to report missing persons. Mbula Bura, whose 19-year-old daughter Esther Mbula is still missing, said 37 names had been registered. "Parents who could not find their children were invited to come and register. I discovered that 37 names have been registered so far as missing," he said.
Another parent, Emmanuel Dari, said his 16-year-old daughter Lucy Emmanuel was in the classroom when the terrorists took her away. "Since yesterday, we have not been able to sleep," he said.
A state delegation led by the Commissioner for Education, Lawan Wakilbe, visited the town to assess the situation. The Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, did not respond to calls for comment.
