A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced a 25-year-old man, Jerry Njoku, to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 10-year-old girl, in a ruling that has been hailed as a significant victory in the fight against child sexual abuse and a strong deterrent to would-be offenders.

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Justice Rita Oguguo held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charge of defilement against the convict beyond reasonable doubt. The court also ordered Njoku to pay N5 million to the family of the minor for her upkeep and rehabilitation. The sentence is to run concurrently, alongside the fine, which must be paid to the victim's family.

The ruling marks another significant victory in the fight against child sexual abuse in Rivers State, reinforcing the judiciary's resolve to hold offenders accountable and impose strict penalties on perpetrators of sexual violence involving children. The court described the offence as grievous, underscoring the judiciary's commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society.

Reacting to the ruling, the prosecution counsel, Precious Ordu, a Chief State Counsel in the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, described the judgment as a welcome development that would serve as a strong deterrent to others contemplating similar acts. "It is a welcome development that, at least, those who have the intention of defiling minors will also sit up and control their urge," Ordu said.

He further noted that the victim suffered severe physical and psychological trauma, stressing that the compensation awarded by the court would help cater to her welfare and recovery. "The court gave a seven-year sentence to the defendant with hard labour and a fine of N5 million to be paid to the victim's family for the upkeep of the girl, the victim herself," Ordu stated, describing the judgment as justice for the state, the victim and the convict.

The defence counsel declined to comment on the judgment after it was delivered.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by the Rivers State Government through the Ministry of Justice to ensure accountability for sexual offences against minors and protect vulnerable children in the state. The judgment has been widely welcomed by child rights advocates and members of the public, who have praised the court for sending a clear message that perpetrators of sexual offences against minors will face stiff punishment.

The conviction of Jerry Njoku serves as a stark reminder that the Nigerian judiciary is increasingly taking a firm stance against child sexual abuse, and that offenders will be made to face the full consequences of their actions under the law. For the 10-year-old victim and her family, the court's ruling offers a measure of justice and a pathway toward healing and recovery.
