The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the Lagos State Examinations Board, has postponed all Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, following the declaration of the Oro Festival in parts of the Ikorodu Division. The adjustment to the examination timetable, which commenced successfully on Monday, June 29, 2026, was announced in a press release issued on Wednesday.

According to the release, the postponement was necessitated by the Oro Festival, a traditional cultural observance that typically involves restrictions on movement and public activities in affected communities. Following due consultation with relevant stakeholders, the State government approved the rescheduling of all examination papers originally slated for July 1. The affected papers will now be written on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, while all other examination papers will be conducted on their previously scheduled dates.

The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard the lives of candidates, examination personnel, and other stakeholders, while also ensuring the smooth and orderly conduct of the examination without disruption. The Board expressed regret for any inconvenience the change may cause and solicited the understanding and cooperation of parents, guardians, school administrators, candidates, and the general public.

Candidates were advised to obtain the revised examination schedule through their respective schools and make adequate preparations for the rescheduled papers. The Lagos State Examinations Board reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and hitch-free examinations in line with the educational aspirations of Lagos State.

The Oro Festival is a traditional Yoruba cultural practice observed in various parts of Lagos and Ogun states, often involving restrictions on movement and public activities during the festival period. The postponement reflects the state government's recognition of cultural sensitivities and its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all examination candidates and personnel.
