After months of suffering, the people of Bille Kingdom in Rivers State have finally received good news. Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Federal Government, and oil companies have agreed on a plan to stop the gas leak that has been destroying the community.
Governor Fubara announced the agreement on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, after a meeting at Government House in Port Harcourt. The meeting brought together the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, officials from the Federal Ministry of Petroleum, oil company representatives, and traditional rulers from Bille.
The gas leak, which started in October 2025, has caused serious problems for the community. Residents have complained that gas has been bubbling in their water, making it unsafe to drink. Fishing and farming have stopped, and many families have fallen sick.
Governor Fubara said all parties have agreed on practical steps to fix the problem. The Federal Government and the oil companies have promised that work to stop the leak will begin in the coming weeks. The governor also promised to upgrade the community's Primary Healthcare Centre to help residents who have become ill.
Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo thanked Governor Fubara for his quick response and assured the community that the government and oil companies are committed to solving the problem. He said the safety of the people is the top priority.
For the families of Bille, who have lived in fear for nearly a year, the agreement brings hope that their nightmare may finally be coming to an end.
