The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has officially debunked viral social media reports claiming that another building had collapsed in the Alakija area of Lagos State, warning that the spread of false emergency alerts could divert critical resources and hamper genuine rescue operations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 2, 2026, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that the agency immediately deployed personnel to the reported location upon receiving the information. However, after a thorough sweep and technical assessment of the area, no evidence of a second building collapse was found. “Following the receipt of the information, the Agency immediately deployed personnel to assess the reported location. After a thorough sweep of the area, no evidence of a second building collapse was found,” the statement read.

LASEMA urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it, warning that the circulation of false emergency reports could have serious consequences. “The circulation of false emergency reports diverts critical resources, dissipates operational efforts and may delay response to genuine emergencies where lives are at risk,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. The agency appreciated the vigilance of Lagosians but encouraged the public to continue reporting emergencies through the appropriate channels, allowing first responders to verify incidents before information is widely circulated.

The clarification comes amid a recent real tragedy in the Alakija community. On Thursday, June 25, 2026, a three-storey shopping complex at Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town, in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, collapsed, claiming nine lives and injuring 27 others. That incident triggered a massive multi-agency rescue operation that lasted for two days before emergency responders recovered all victims trapped beneath the rubble.

The LASEMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through prompt and coordinated emergency response. “Under the leadership of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, LASEMA and all emergency response agencies remain fully committed to protecting lives and property through prompt, coordinated and professional emergency response,” the statement added.
