Suspected bandits launched a brazen attack on the Mpape community in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory late Wednesday night, 8 July 2026, killing a security guard and abducting three residents, including a pastor, in an incident that has heightened fears over the growing insecurity in the nation's capital. The attackers, believed to be about 10 in number, struck the Yellow House area of Mpape, a developing neighbourhood located just a few minutes' drive from the highbrow Maitama District and surprisingly close to a military barracks in Abuja.

According to multiple accounts from residents, the gunmen arrived shortly before 11 p.m. and attempted to break into a particular residence in the neighbourhood. However, their plan was disrupted when a police patrol team, alerted by distressed residents, arrived at the scene. The attackers engaged the officers in an exchange of gunfire but were unable to gain access to their intended target and were forced to retreat. A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that the attackers withdrew immediately as they exchanged gunshots with the security men. As the gunmen fled the scene, they encountered a pastor who was returning home in his car. They abducted him from his vehicle and also kidnapped two other residents along the road. The pastor's car was later recovered by security operatives, abandoned within the neighbourhood.

During the operation, another resident sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was later evacuated by the police to a hospital for medical treatment. Residents reported that sporadic gunfire continued to echo around the vicinity of the community until about 2 a.m., creating panic among inhabitants who remained trapped in their homes throughout the night. The attack on Mpape, a community located just minutes from the highbrow Maitama District and close to military barracks, has reignited concerns about the persistent insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.

As of the time of filing this report, the FCT Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the command's spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, proved abortive as she did not respond to telephone calls or WhatsApp messages. The attack came as part of a broader wave of violence across the country, with security forces also recording successes and setbacks in other states. The incident has left residents of Mpape in a state of fear, with many calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property. The police have assured that efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
