The rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians, with many celebrating the victims’ freedom while demanding greater transparency from authorities over the circumstances surrounding the operation and the identities of those arrested.
On Friday, July 10, 2026, the Presidency announced the successful rescue of all abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire, Oyo State. The announcement was made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, through a post on his verified X account, where he confirmed that security agencies had recovered the victims after weeks in captivity.
In a video shared alongside the announcement, one of the rescued victims, Rachael Alamu, identified as the principal of Community High School, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the security agencies involved in the operation.
“President sir, our father, we are grateful, we understand your commitment to our safety and we appreciate all you did for us,” Alamu said, while also thanking security personnel for their efforts in securing their release.
The rescue followed the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that attracted national attention and raised renewed concerns about the safety of educational institutions in areas affected by insecurity.
According to the Presidency, the operation was carried out by security agencies, including the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force. The government also stated that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, while some others were neutralised during the operation.
However, while many Nigerians welcomed the safe return of the victims, several citizens took to social media platforms to demand more details about the operation, particularly the identities and status of the arrested suspects.
Some social media users questioned why authorities had not released images or further information about those allegedly arrested during the rescue mission.
One user, identified as @salees01, congratulated the rescued victims and their families but asked authorities to provide evidence of the arrests, questioning where the suspected terrorists were.
Another user, @God_streasure7, called for a full account of the operation, saying Nigerians deserved more information about what happened.
Similarly, @Saythetrut99188 expressed doubts about the official explanation and demanded further clarification from the government.
Other Nigerians urged authorities to publicly present the arrested suspects and ensure they face prosecution. They argued that transparency would help build public confidence and demonstrate accountability in the fight against terrorism and kidnapping.
A social media user, @EdmundOnoriode, called for the suspects to be publicly paraded and subjected to swift justice if found responsible for the abduction.
The Federal Government has, however, not released additional details about the rescue operation, including the identities of the arrested suspects, the exact location where the victims were recovered or the circumstances that led to their freedom.
Meanwhile, the successful rescue operation has been welcomed by government officials, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who described the development as a major relief after weeks of anxiety for the victims’ families and residents of the state.
The incident has continued to fuel national discussions about security, accountability and the need for stronger measures to prevent future attacks on schools and vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
