One person has been confirmed dead while seven others sustained injuries after a section of the entrance canopy at the ongoing construction site of the new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex collapsed in Gombe State.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the construction site of the new Assembly Complex in Gombe, with the collapse involving a cantilevered entrance canopy that was still under construction. The state government confirmed that emergency response efforts were immediately activated following the accident.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Gombe State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, Danladi Adamu, the government said the collapse resulted in the death of one construction worker, while seven others were rescued with varying degrees of injuries.
The statement revealed that five of the injured workers are currently receiving medical treatment at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, while two others were taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, for further medical attention.
Following the incident, the Gombe State Government ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse and identify any possible failures in construction processes, safety measures, or supervision.
The Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, alongside relevant emergency response agencies, regulatory bodies and technical experts, has been directed to begin safety and accountability procedures as part of efforts to establish the cause of the accident.
Authorities also instructed the contractor handling the project and the supervising consultant to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours. The report is expected to include preliminary findings, while a more detailed technical investigation will provide recommendations on preventing similar incidents in the future.
The state government further directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical treatment at its expense, assuring that the welfare of those affected remains a priority.
Officials said the outcome of the investigation would guide further government decisions, adding that appropriate actions would be taken in accordance with engineering regulations, construction safety standards and relevant laws.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict compliance with safety and quality standards in public infrastructure projects across Gombe State, promising to provide further updates as more verified information becomes available.
The collapse has raised fresh concerns about construction safety practices, particularly in large public projects, where experts often stress the importance of proper supervision, material quality checks and adherence to approved engineering standards.
