A devastating tragedy has unfolded in Zamfara State, where a teacher, Malam Mustapha Yahaya Maru, was killed by his abductors despite his family paying a N3 million ransom in the hope of securing his freedom, a brutal outcome that has once again exposed the hollow promise of ransom payments in Nigeria's kidnapping crisis. The development was disclosed by conflict journalist Bakatsine, who reports on insecurity in Nigeria's North-West, in a post on X on Saturday, 11 July 2026, sparking widespread outrage and grief across the country.
Maru, a teacher at the Federal Government College, Anka, was abducted on 4 May 2026 while travelling to Anka along the Anka Road in Zamfara State. He was in a vehicle with other passengers when armed bandits intercepted them and took them hostage. Following the abduction, the kidnappers contacted his family and initially demanded a ransom of N10 million, which was later reduced to N5 million after negotiations. The family, desperate to bring him home alive, made frantic efforts to raise the money and eventually managed to pay N3 million.
However, despite the payment, the family was informed on Saturday morning that Maru had been killed by his captors. The bandits, instead of releasing him, took the money and ended his life, leaving his family and community in deep mourning. In a heartbreaking post on X, Bakatsine wrote: "SAD UPDATE: Malam Mustapha Yahaya Maru, a teacher from Maru who was abducted along Anka road, has reportedly been killed by his captors despite his family paying ₦3 million ransom. A devastating reminder that paying ransom is no guarantee of survival".
The killing has thrown the Maru community and the entire school environment into mourning, with residents expressing renewed fear over the worsening insecurity and recurring cases of kidnapping across parts of northern Nigeria. The incident has also highlighted the growing brutality of bandits who, even after receiving ransom payments, continue to kill their victims, raising questions about the effectiveness of the government's policy against ransom payments.
As of the time of this report, authorities had yet to officially confirm the killing. The tragic death of Malam Mustapha Yahaya Maru serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of the kidnapping epidemic in Zamfara State and the urgent need for decisive action to protect lives and restore peace to the region. May Allah forgive him, grant him Jannatul Firdaus, and comfort his family and everyone mourning this tragic loss.
