A new chapter in Edo State's political history was written on Saturday, 11 July 2026, as 30-year-old Anthony Osarobo emerged as the youngest chairman-elect of Ovia South West Local Government Area, securing a landslide victory in the local government elections conducted by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission. Osarobo, who contested under the banner of the All Progressives Congress, polled an impressive 98,994 votes across the council's 10 wards, defeating candidates from 11 other political parties in a resounding mandate that has sent ripples through the state's political landscape.
The Returning Officer for the election announced the results at the EDSIEC Local Government Collation Centre, declaring Osarobo duly elected after a comprehensive collation of results across party lines. The final results showed a dominant performance by the APC, with Osarobo's tally dwarfing the combined votes of his challengers. The Allied Party polled 28 votes, Action Alliance secured 42 votes, African Action Congress had 32 votes, Action Democratic Party scored 26 votes, All Progressives Grand Alliance garnered 25 votes, Allied People's Movement received five votes, Action People's Party recorded 12 votes, while the New Nigeria People's Party, Peoples Redemption Party, and Young Progressives Party each polled one vote, and the Zenith Labour Party secured 15 votes. The overwhelming margin of victory underscored the electorate's confidence in the young politician, who ran a campaign focused on development, good governance, and grassroots engagement.
Reacting to his historic victory, an elated Osarobo expressed profound gratitude to the people of Ovia South West for what he described as an overwhelming mandate. He said he was happy to have emerged as the Chairman-elect of Ovia South West and did not take the victory for granted, adding that it was made possible by the Almighty God and the support and confidence reposed in him by the people. He pledged to use the mandate to work tirelessly for the development and progress of Ovia South West. His victory speech struck a chord of humility and determination, resonating with supporters who had turned out in large numbers to back his candidacy.
The Edo State Commissioner for Livestock Development also congratulated Osarobo, describing the election as transparent and commending the people of Ovia South West for their peaceful participation. He expressed optimism that the chairman-elect would fulfil his campaign promises and deliver meaningful development to the people of the council area. The peaceful conduct of the election was also praised by Governor Monday Okpebholo, who voted earlier in the day at his Ward 2 polling unit in Esan Central Local Government Area. The governor commended the impressive turnout and the early deployment of election officials, materials, and security personnel by the electoral commission, describing the exercise as a true demonstration of grassroots democracy.
Osarobo's emergence as the youngest chairman in the history of Ovia South West Local Government Area marks a significant milestone in Edo State's political evolution, signaling a growing appetite for youthful, energetic leadership at the grassroots level. His victory is seen by many as a testament to the power of community engagement and the ability of young politicians to connect with voters on issues that matter most to their daily lives. As he prepares to assume office, all eyes will be on the 30-year-old chairman-elect to see how he translates his campaign promises into tangible development for the people of Ovia South West.
